Lady Raiders Defeat Lakewood, Improve to 12-1

Last season, the Lady Raider basketball team got off to an amazing start. Going 10-1 in their first 11 games, the team had one of the best starts in school history. That 2018-2019 squad entered the MHSAA districts with a 15-5 record and had high hopes of making a lengthy playoff run.

That fantastic season came to an end on March 4th when the Lady Raiders were knocked out in the first round of districts. That season ending 52-49 loss came at the hands of the Lakewood Vikings.

On Tuesday night, ten months after that loss to the Vikings, the Lady Raiders were able to get some sweet revenge, and they did so in convincing style. The Raiders defeated the Vikings 52-17 at Portland High School.

Seven Raiders scored in their team’s winning performance. Ashley Bower led all scorers with 14 points. Breckyn Werner scored 10 points. Shaylyn Dziewiatkowski had eight points. Ava Guilford, Hannah Schrauben and Alivia Densmore each had six points, and Ava Gruber had two points.

Olivia Lang led Lakewood with five points.

Scoring summary by quarter:

1st – 2nd – 3rd – 4th – Final

Portland 15 – 15 – 12 – 10 – 52

Lakewood 5 – 2 – 4 – 6 – 17

With tonight’s win, the Raiders improve to 12-1 on the season. They will host Ionia on Friday night. Ionia is 9-2 with their only losses coming to Portland and Lansing Catholic.
