Portland Civic Players to Hold Open Auditions for Our Town

Portland Civic Players announces open auditions for their spring production of Our Town, on January 13 & 14 at 7pm. This beloved Pulitzer prize winning play by Thornton Wilder, has remained one of the most produced non-musical plays since its first production in 1938. The play follows the daily lives of commonplace characters in the unremarkable town of Grover’s Corners, NH around the beginning of the 20th century. With a simple focus on the events of everyday life, the play touches upon universal themes of what it is to be human. Thornton Wilder, said of Our Town, "It is an attempt to find a value above all price for the smallest events of our daily life.” With minimal staging Our Town relies on the power of words to show audiences the citizens of Grover’s Corners in their living, in their loving, and in their dying. As the audience observes the action of the play they become more than spectators, they recognize themselves and their own town; through that, theater becomes a transformative experience.

The cast includes 17-19 men/teens, and 8-10 women/teens. Show dates are March 20-22, 27 & 28, and is directed by Tom Little and Shelley Perry. Our Town is being produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Auditions will be held at Portland Community Theater, located at 231 Maple Street, Portland.
