Raider Wrestling can sum up the past week in one word, “Exciting”.
With last week being the final week before winter break, student-athletes had quite a bit to manage, but the Raider Wrestlers trusted their training, buckled down and succeeded.
On Wednesday, the Raider Wrestlers had two duals, Alma and Carson City, but only one goal in mind: avenge their loss to Carson City that occurred just days prior. The Raiders started the night with a loss to Alma, 50-18, but rebounded well against Carson City. The Raiders adjusted their line up and persevered with Drew Miller (Freshman 119/125) pinning in a “must win” situation, igniting what would be an exciting week of wrestling.
On Saturday, the Raider Wrestlers traveled to Holland High School and competed in the Tim Horn, 10-team tournament. In the finals, the Raiders bested the 2019 regional final team, Allendale, to capture the 1st place trophy and medals. Similar to the Carson City Quad, It wasn’t an easy day, the Raiders had two separate duals come down to the last match. Against Greenville in the semifinal dual, Trent Treweiler (sophomore 130/135/140) pinned to finish the dual in an exciting fashion. In the dual for first place, the Raiders went into their final match down two team points. Deakin Guidi (Freshman 140/145), in a tough match, pinned his opponent to solidify the team championship for the Raiders.
“We wrestled well throughout the day focusing on getting to our positions and putting the team score in front of our individual match scores. I’m proud of our guys. Despite being a young team, these guys think like upperclassmen and support one another regardless of details. I believe our team chemistry is a direct result of our mature and hard-working group of seniors.”
Be sure to catch your Raider Wrestlers over winter break at Ionia High School on Saturday, December 28th.
