Lady Raider Basketball Opens Season with 53-35 Win Over Laingsburg
The Portland High School girls basketball season opened their 2019-2020 campaign with a decisive win over the Wolfpack of Laingsburg on Tuesday night at home.
Sophomore Ashley Bower led the Raiders offensively with 14 points including three three-pointers. Sophomore Breckyn Werner contributed 10 points for the Raiders, while sophomore Ava Guilford added nine points including three three-pointers.
Senior Kara Mahoney led the Wolfpack with 12 points including two three-pointers.
After the game, Raider coach Jason Haid said, “We wanted to get off to a quick start. We talked about starting with a lot of intensity and just being ready to play. With the young team that we have, that was our worry… are we going to come out and play with some enthusiasm? I think we did that. We hit a couple shots from the outside. I think Ashley (Bower) and Ava Guilford each hit a couple threes there in the first half. That really got us going. We played a little sloppy at times. I thought we ran the floor really well. They kind of picked up the pressure a little bit and we were kind of careless with the ball. Once we got our composure back, we were okay.”
Haid added, “I was really proud of the way the girls shared the basketball tonight. I think we had a couple in double figures and a couple that were close. Defensively, I thought we played well, we just have to rebound a little bit better. I thought they out rebounded us tonight, but some things that we can fix.”
