Downtown Portland’s Newest Business “The Port” Offers Wine Tasting and Unique Michigan Based Product

Visitors to downtown Portland can now experience a variety of Michigan made craft wine and other fine Michigan based products.  Owners Merry and Brian Hass recently opened the doors to their new business, The Port.

Located at 143 Kent Street, The Port also offers special events like line dancing, wine and paint, wine and sign, and wax on tap where you make your own candles.  With a maximum capacity of 95, they also take reservations for private events like parties, receptions and showers.

The new venture opened for business on September 20th and had their official grand opening celebration on November 2nd.

Merry is originally from Ludington and worked previously in youth ministry.  Brian is originally from Wyoming and is an accountant.  The family has called Portland home for three years now since they moved here from Grandville.

All the wine served and sold at The Port is “Modern Craft Wine” made in Au Gres, Michigan, and the majority of the grapes used are sourced in Michigan.

A glass of wine can be purchased for $5, or you can get five samples for $6.  Bottle prices range from $14.50 for fruit infused to $24.00 for ice wines.

Customers can also purchase a wide variety of Michigan made chocolates, cheese, gourmet pretzels and more.  Lemonade flights are also available for the youngsters.

If you are clueless like me when it comes to wine, Merry said, “We can find something for everyone.  People that don’t know much to those who know way more than me.” She added, “We can mix something in to find a flavor you like.”

Merry also said that she hopes customers will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.  They are always looking for suggestions from customers too.  One suggestion has them working on a hot chocolate and wine mix served in a glass rimmed in chocolate.

Brian also wants customers to know that “People can bring in their own food.”

The couple is looking into possibly starting a mid-Michigan wine tasting tour some time in 2020 that would include stops at several wine tasting rooms in mid-Michigan.

The Port is open Tuesday through Thursday 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM.  They are closed Sunday and Monday.
