Carson Frewen Named September Student-Athlete of the Month
In his nomination of Frewen at the end of September, Portland Coach John Novara said, “Carson is a returning starter from last year's State Finalist football team. Carson lead our team in tackles last year and is currently leading our team in tackles this year. Carson has 45 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 INT and 1 Fumble recovery. Carson has been an important factor in our 5 - 0 start and in leading our defensive unit.”
Carson is the son of Terry and Jenny Frewen.
To be nominated, a student athlete must attend either Portland High School or St. Patrick School, and be a member of a varsity sports program or school-sponsored athletic club at his/her school. Nominations may be made by a member of their high school coaching staff, athletic director, principal, or a school recognized student government organization at his/her school. Nominations are also accepted from The Portland Beacon contributing writers.
The monthly winner is selected by a three-person panel. Monthly winners are entered into the student-athlete of the year contest. The winner for the year receives a party platter from J-Dubbs Signature Subs.
Other talented local athletes receiving nominations for September were:
Samee Teachworth – SPS Volleyball
St. Patrick 5th year Varsity Volleyball Coach Heidi Wenzel said, “My nomination is for Samee Teachworth, a senior captain on the Portland St Patrick Volleyball team. Samee is a positive leader on and off the court that has a passion not only for the game but for helping her teammates as well. She is hardworking and an all-around great player! She contributes an average of 2.62 kills per set with a .341 hitting average and .6 blocks per set. She is an anchor for our team on defense and offense and has a great attitude that always gets the team energy sparked! She truly is a standout that deserves to have her hard work, leadership and accomplishments recognized.”
Martin White – SPS Cross Country
St. Patrick cross country coach Daniel Lawless said, “I would like to submit Martin White for the Portland Beacon athlete of the month. (Martin) Set 3 PR’s in his first 8 cross country meets. Martin is a member of the Portland St. Patrick cross country team. In fact, Martin is the only boy on our team, which is part of the reason I am nominating him. Martin came into the season knowing that he would be the only boy on the team. Previous to this Martin had not competed in distance running. He has 2 sisters who have been on the girl’s team the past 2 years so he knew what he was getting into. Martin has consistently had a positive attitude going to the line at each meet being the only runner in his box. Martin has been a great addition to the team, he has a wonderful sense of humor and a strong faith. Martin has set 3 PR’s in his first 8 cross country meets.”
David Svanda - PHS Football
Nominated by Beacon Contributor Robert Lathers, Svanda is a receiver and defensive end on the Raider football team. He has been a key part of the Raider offense this season, and a solid feature of the defense at defensive end. He had two touchdowns in the Raider victory over Charlotte in week four and one against Ovid-Elsie in week one. He also forced a key safety in the win over DeWitt. He suffered a knee injury at Lansing Catholic in week five forcing him to sit out the Eaton Rapids game, but rumor has it he may be able to return to action soon. Svanda is also a standout on the Raider basketball team.
Connor Cross – SPS Football
Shamrock Football Coach and AD Patrick Russman said, “I nominate Connor Cross for the St. Patrick Football team. On the season he has the following stats (as of end of September):
Passing 17-25 542 yds 9 TD's
Rushing 19-128 1TD
Connor has led the team to a 5-0 start and has shown great maturity in his second year as a starting QB.
We appreciate the efforts Connor is putting in on and off the field to make the team the best it can be.”
