Portland High School Tennis Results from September 14th

Portland High School boy's tennis hosted their final quad of the year on Saturday. We invited some of the teams from our regional for seeding purposes to this quad. This gives us a chance to see where we're at in terms of our ability to qualify for the state tournament. I tell the team every year that this is just a barometer though. We still need to win the matches when regionals come around. The unfortunate truth about boys tennis is that many small schools are really being impacted by something that is affecting their numbers. This happened shortly after boys tennis moved to the fall in 2007 and has been getting worse every year since. Ovid-Elsie was only able to field 6 players on their team. Lakewood has 12 players but no extras. They had 1 out sick today and didn't have anyone they could put in his spot. Lansing Christian is fielding about 15 players. And we've got one of our smallest teams in a while at 19 players. The match played out as you would expect with numbers like that. Portland won the day by only dropping 3 matches total. Two of those matches were to Lansing Christian. The other was to a very solid 1 singles player from Lakewood. Things are looking good for the team heading into our last three weeks before regionals. I'm hoping we keep playing well and play into an extended season. The team plays its last two league matches this week. We host Ionia on Monday and Eaton Rapids on Wednesday.
