Portland High School Tennis Falls to Haslett, Takes First at Sailor Quad

Haslett traveled to Portland Thursday for a duel match. Haslett is returning a very strong team with 3 singles players who could probably all play one singles on our team. I was proud of how the guys kept their composure through the match and used it as an opportunity to learn about what they need to do if they ever want to reach that level. Our doubles are typically stronger and they showed that. 1 doubles and 3 doubles were in very tight matches but couldn't quite pull it out in the end. 2 doubles was as strong as always and won one of our two wins of the day. The other win came from Jorgen Sonday at 4 singles. We play again Saturday at the South Christian Sailor Quad.

Portland traveled to Grand Rapids South Christian for the Sailor Quad on Saturday. This was a battle of three teams that are no strangers to the state tournament. South Christian has missed out a couple of times in the last couple of years. But they are in a very tough regional. Kalamazoo Christian and Essexville Garber have qualified for the last couple of years. I felt like this match was a good barometer for all of the hard work and tough matches we've played this season. Every match I've seen improvements on last year. The guys played hard and had a lot of tough matches with a lot of split sets and tie breakers. I the end we managed to win most of ours and came out as the winning team. This is really exciting for how the rest of our season could go. Flight champions on Saturday were Jorgen Sonday at 4 singles, Gabe Hankey and Marty Thelen at 1 doubles, Kurt Kraczon and Alex Russman at 2 doubles, and Casey Smith and Kai Kipp at 4 doubles. The team plays it first league match at Lansing Catholic on Wednesday.
