Local Wellness Secret Hidden in Plain Sight

If you are anything like me, you likely travel up and down Grand River Avenue multiple times a day in your daily routine. You may think you know all the local business locations like the back of your hand.

But did you ever realize we have a gym located right on grand river fully equipped with machine weights and cardio equipment? Well we do!

Health Source Physical Therapy and Wellness Center located at 1447 East Grand River Avenue directly across from Tom’s Do it Center has a wide variety of fitness equipment readily available to its members.

Father and son owners Jay and Jason Boddu opened he gym in 2007 as an extension of their physical therapy clinic which has been serving the community since 2000.

Jason Boddu says that members of the wellness center tell him that it is the, “secret they didn’t even know about.”

The gym is open 6:00 AM until 8:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 8:00 AM until noon on Saturday. It features treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, recumbent bikes, dumbbells, and machine weights in a clean and well-organized setting. It also features shower facilities for those looking to get a quick workout in before going to work.

Jason said, “You can come and do what you want at your own pace and there is no need to sign up to classes.” He added, “You can come in and out as much as you want in the same day.”

The gym offers a trial day pass for just $5. Jason said it is a “Nice way to get to know if it is right for you before committing to a membership.”

As for the decision to add the gym to the clinic, Jason said, “10 years ago, we would have patients who at the end of physical therapy treatment we would tell to go to a local gym to get more exercise. Many of them didn’t do it because of the lack of local options. Some would come back later for treatment of minor problems due to lack of exercise.”

If you are looking to bench press a house or to have the body of an action movie hero, this gym probably is not for you. Jason says, “It is great for everyday folks, but not if you are looking for the body of a X man. It is just for those who want to be healthy long term. Those interested in longevity and a long health span, not just a long-life span.”

Jason says that there is always someone present at the front desk if you have a question, and more often than not either himself or his father Jay are on site. Both are Physical Therapists. Jason said, “We are different from large chains in that a physical therapist is available for consultation. We may be able to identify if there is an issue where signing a membership may not be best for you right now and guide you with best course of action.”

Gym memberships start at $100 for an individual for three months. They also offer six- and 12-month memberships for couples and families.

The clinic also offers massage therapy by appointment only. Walk ins are not accepted.

They will also be holding Zumba classes on Wednesdays 6:00-7:00 PM starting September 11th. The cost is $42 for six weeks or $9 drop in per class. Space is limited. For more information you can contact instructor Margie Jacobs at 517-243-2436.

The clinic is also looking into adding additional services and classes in the future. Jason said, “Our goal is eventually adding yoga and Pilates classes.”
