PHS Golf Team Finishes Season Strong at Regionals
At Wednesday’s MHSAA Division 3 Boy’s Golf Regional Tournament, the boys’ varsity golf team put together their BEST TEAM and INIDIVIDUAL SCORES in eighteen-hole tournament competition this season. Although their team score wasn’t low enough to be one of three out of nineteen teams in this Regional to move on to state finals, Portland’s score of 339 did out distance fourteen other teams which earned the Raiders a fifth place finish.
Played at “Pigeon Creek Golf Course in West Olive, Michigan, the Raiders Regional goals were: To have their best individual rounds of the season and to finish in the top third of the region – Both goals accomplished!
One the states highly ranked Division 3 golf programs, Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian (the 2018 D4 State Champions) won the Regional with a score of 308 using the fifth player score tie breaker over Grand Rapids West Catholic. Grand Rapids South Christian shot a team score of 316 to be the third qualify team for states. … There is an additional Portland achievement from yesterday’s Regional:
Individually for the Raiders:
Junior, Zach Pier shot an outstanding round of three-over-par 74 to finish in fifth place individually out of eighty-six golfers and earned his third consecutive trip to the Division 3 State Finals as an individual. Only three, non-team qualifying golfers move on from each of the six regions to play in the state finals.
Senior, Ethan Getchell finished his PHS golf career at yesterday’s event shooting an 89. Jared Thomas (a junior) put together a near bogey round for himself and finished with a 91. Freshman, Hayden Getchell carded a season and career best 85. Although Luke Nobis’ score wasn’t used in determining the Portland team score, he carded a season low of 95. In a rare opportunity, CJ Miller (a junior – who was taken as Portland’s alternate golfer if needed) played as an exhibition competitor and shot his season’s best score of 92.
The boy’s JV and varsity golf teams, Coach Snellenberger, Coach Martin and consulting and retired Coach Seekamp extend their collective “best of luck” to Zach Pier has he prepares to play in next Friday’s and Saturday’s thirty-six hole D-3 State Finals being played at “The Katke” at Ferris State University (in Big Rapids).
