PHS Golf Update

The varsity boy’s golf team weathered an off day at the divisional tournament by having just enough of a team point led going into the tournament competition to finish in second place in the final standings of the CAAC White Division. The eighteen-hole CAAC White Divisional tournament was played at The Emerald Golf Course near St. Johns. The Raiders had just enough to fend off Ionia’s effort to overtake them for second place.

Zach Pier was the leading Raider scorer with an 86; Ethan Getchell had a 99;

Jared Thomas and Luke Nobis each carded rounds of 100 to give the Raiders a combined team total of 385 and a third place finish for the tournament.

Tournament team results: First place (with a divisional record of 35-0) Lansing Catholic with a 351; 2nd Ionia had a 381; 3rd Portland with a 335; 4th Charlotte had a 393; 5th Eaton Rapids with a 480 and Lansing Sexton did not participate.

Final 2019 CAAC White Divisional Standings: Lansing Catholic – 48 pts.; Portland – 36 pts.; Ionia – 35 pts.; Charlotte - 25 pts. and Eaton Rapids had 16 pts.

In the individual divisional standings for Portland: Zach Pier finished in third place, Ethan Getchell in sixth place and Jared Thomas took seventh place out of fifty-two golfers earning all three Raiders first team All-Conference honors. Freshman Hayden Getchell took fourteenth place overall an earned Honorable Mention recognition.

At Thursday’s CAAC Open Tournament, the varsity boy’s golf team went up against eleven teams with representative teams from all three divisions of the CAAC. With ten of the twelve teams being either division one or two golf teams, the Raiders (a division 3 team) had a solid showing against some of the best high school golf teams in the greater Lansing area this spring. Played at the Timber Ridge Golf Course, one of the more challenging golf courses in mid-Michigan, the Raiders shot a team score of 385. Dewitt captured first place with a 316. Haslett took second with a 328 and Mason was third with a 329.

Zach Pier, medaled and finished tied for seventh place out of sixty-two golfers, shot an 81 on the par 72 course. Luke Nobis finished with a 99; Ethan Getchell had a 100 and Jared Thomas carded a 105.

The golf team takes the remainder of this season’s fortune next Wednesday when they travel to West Olive to compete in the MHSAA Division 3, Regional Tournament at Pigeon Creek Golf Course.
