The St. Patrick's Shamrocks travelled to Davenport University on Saturday, May 11th for a 4 team tournament. Competition was fierce, and the Shamrocks unbeaten streak came to an end in the first game, losing 1-0 to Division 3 ranked Bronson. The Shamrocks bounced right back, beating #7 Decatur in the second game 7-1.
In the first game, Nathan Lehnert continued his excellence on the mound, pitching 6 innings, giving up 3 hits, no earned runs, and 4 strikeouts. Offensive leaders were sparse, with Sophomores Evan Schrauben and Connor Cross each going 1 for 3.
In the second game, the Shamrocks came to redeem themselves. Sam Mauren got the win on the mound, pitching 5 innings, with 2 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 6. Offensive leaders were Ryan Lay who went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI, Sam Mauren went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, and Devin Fedewa who went 2 for 3.
Coach Bryan Scheurer was impressed with the the opposing teams. "We faced a really good arm in game 1 and struggled overall at the plate throughout 6 innings. Nathan pitched a great game and kept us in it (and Brandon finishing out the 7th inning). We had 2 Sophomores really show some grit leading off the bottom of the 7th with back to back singles, setting the table for the middle of our lineup, but we weren't able to finish the job. We will learn and grow from this one. Game 2 featured another great pitching performance from Sam Mauren, and we started to swing the bat better and execute situationally in the middle to later portions of the game. Overall: It is frustrating to lose a game you had a real opportunity to win, I would be disappointed if our team didn't feel that way, however, we are gonna be better as a team for it. I was very impressed with our bounce back in Game 2 versus a team that beat us soundly last year."
The Shamrocks play next on Monday, May 13th home against Bath.
