Obituary for Stewart Nelson Hill
Stewart Nelson Hill, of Portland, 48, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 22, 2019. As an alumnus of Michigan State University’s College of Engineering, Stewart was honored to be a Spartan civil engineer. His hunger for complex challenges and ability to improve or repair anything was admirable and marveled by those who saw the projects he completed. Stewart also had an adoration for the outdoors. He would frequently be found splitting wood and enjoying long walks. He was a well-rounded, ardent man of many talents with a great appreciation for music and art. A lover of knowledge, Stew never stopped learning and always kept himself well informed. Stew's four children were his pride and joy, and he sung their praises to all of his family and friends. He considered them the most worthwhile part of his life. Additionally, his unrivaled ability to tell a story was praised by friends and family alike. Through creative and vivid reiterations of those stories, many looked to him to give the best delivery and tell the tale in his words. Stew's lightning-fast wit, perfect timing, and political incorrectness left all who knew him rolling in the aisles with laughter, extremely angry, or awestruck. His firm belief in using all your resources to selflessly assist a friend in need will forever be a cornerstone of Stewart's unparalleled legacy. He is survived by his children, Ezekiel (Nancy) of Lowell, Jacob of Novi, Abigail and Magdalene of Battle Creek; mother, Ruth of Portland; siblings, Christopher (Brenda) of Ionia; Gregory (Judith) of Niles; Constance (John) of Middleville; and numerous nieces & nephews, all of whom have an unfillable hole in their heart. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to honor Stewart do so by donating to the Arbor Day Foundation (arborday.org) in his name.
