Portland Baseball History

Portland has a rich baseball history, with formidable teams dating back to the 1800’s. Portland’s vintage baseball history came alive on Sunday, January 13, 2019, as several local Portland Baseball historians, players, and fans met to share fond memories of past ball games, recount old stories of the Portland Independents ball team vs. the Detroit Tigers, and to make plans for the upcoming Baseball exhibit, to be held in the Red Mill this summer. Those present displayed vintage ball gloves, score books, photographs and ephemera, much of which will be on display at the Red Mill, starting in May, as part of the Portland Area Historical Society’s participation in Portland’s year-long Sesquicentennial Celebration. New Vintage Base Ball Team

The group also discussed the resurrection of the original Portland Independents ball team, as a new Vintage Baseball Team that will play in an epic Vintage Baseball game on Sunday, September 22, 2019. We will face an official touring Vintage Baseball team and will be playing by the game rules of 1864!
