Brandon Scheurer, a senior basketball player at St. Patrick’s School, has been chosen as the winner of the J-Dubbs Signature Subs Student Athlete of the Month award for February.
In his nomination of Brandon, Shamrock Boys Basketball Coack Mark Scheurer said, “He is a four-year letter winner who has just surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career. He has had a strong Senior season by leading the Shamrocks in every offensive category by averaging 16 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game, 3.65 assists per game and 2.88 steals per game. He has also knocked down a team high 38 three-point shots this season and sits around the top 30 all time in the state for career three-point baskets made. Brandon has had a great work ethic to be the best at his craft and has pushed himself to achieve the most he can not only for himself, but his team. He is our leader on and off the court and does that by example very well. He is also around the top of his class academically with over a 4.00 GPA. Brandon was BCAM All State and BCAM Academic All State last year and would think he would repeat that again this year. He was also Co Player of the Year for Ionia County last year, First Team CMAC last year, and LSJ All Area Last Year. He plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University where he signed to play.”
Brandon is also a member of the Shamrock baseball team and has already signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Saginaw Valley State University next year.
J-Dubbs Signature Subs of Portland has partnered with The Portland Beacon to sponsor this award. The monthly winner will receive a free sub of his/her choice from J-Dubbs Signature Subs. Monthly winners will be entered for a chance at the Student Athlete of the Year award, and a free party platter from J-Dubbs Signature Subs.
To be nominated, a student athlete must attend either Portland High School or St. Patrick School, and be a member of a varsity sports program or school-sponsored athletic club at his/her school. Nominations may be made by a member of their high school coaching staff, athletic director, principal, or a school recognized student government organization at his/her school. Nominations are also accepted from The Portland Beacon contributing writers.
The winner was selected by a three-person panel consisting of myself and Portland Beacon contributors Robert Lathers and Benjamin Rex Cross. Previously we conducted an online poll to readers to select the winner. This was very popular and received thousands of votes each month, but in a situation like last month, the poll turned into a contest between one athlete from each school. We feel that may have fostered a sense of one school against the other and that is not the intent of this program.
Other talented local athletes receiving nominations for February were:
Emma Armour – PHS Bowling
Emma has the high average on the team and also has thrown 220 and 207, 206 and 200 games. She qualified for states by taking 4th out of 92 girls at Regionals. In the CAAC conference she is averaging 171. At the CAAC conference tournament she finished 15th out of 61 girls. She is a senior and one of our captains and has help lead our team to its 2nd in a row of us attending States for the State Championship. Emma was nominated by Coachs William Armour III and Joe Whitford.
Mara Schrauben - SPS Basketball
Mara is freshman center on the varsity for St. Patrick’s. In the month of February, she is averaging over 12 points and 6 rebounds per game. As a freshman she provides a strong presence under the rim both offensively and defensively for the Shamrocks. She has worked a great deal on her offensive skill set and she has been an important contributor to the team’s success.
Mara was nominated by Coach Al Schrauben and JV Coach Michelle Smith.
The Portland Beacon’s Student Athlete of the Month contest is sponsored by J-Dubbs Signature Subs of Portland.
