Obituary for Joan Minerva Sumner
Joan Minerva Sumner, age 85, passed away January 19, 2019. The daughter of Josephine and Robert Kerner, Sr., she was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 23, 1933. In 1951, Joan married Robert Sumner in Maryland and moved with him to Portland. She and Bob had one son, William "Bill" Sumner.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son. Surviving are her precious grandchildren, Heather Sumner and Matt (Masha) Sumner; wonderful daughter-in-law, Amy Sumner; brother, Bob (Marilyn) Kerner; nieces and nephews, Laurie (Rick) Kerner, Julie Graft, Pat (Jody) Kerner, Ron (Myra) Kerner; many other special nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Betty Beech; and loving companion of many years, Franklin White.
Joan worked at the Meade Pharmacy, Brown's Pharmacy, and Mervau Pharmacy for 20 years. She enjoyed gardening, baking, and playing cards, but most of all, she loved spending time with her cherished grandchildren. Joan so loved the North Plains Church and the many good friends that were a part of her life there.
A Memorial Service will be officiated by Pastor Greg Gladding at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A luncheon will follow at the Portland VFW 4090.
