St. Pat's boys edge Ashley
Portland St. Patrick's boys basketball team traveled to Ashley on Monday to take on the Bears. After a tight first half, the Shamrocks put together a strong 3rd quarter and defeated the Bears 67-52.
In the 1st quarter, the Shamrocks jumped out to a 20-10 led by Brandon Scheurers two 3 pointers.
The 2nd quarter saw the Bears surge back, winning the quarter 21-16, still leaving the Shamrocks leading at halftime, 36-31. Nathaniel Leahy led the Shamrocks in the 2nd quarter, scoring 10 points to keep them in the game.
The Shamrocks put together a nice 3rd quarter, dominating the Bears 23-9. Again, Nathaniel Leahy led the Shamrocks with 9 points, and Brandon Scheurer putting in 8. The Shamrocks took a 59-40 lead into the 4th quarter.
In the 4th quarter, the Shamrocks played good defense and stayed strong to finish out, losing the quarter 12-8, but taking home a 67-52 victory.
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Nathaniel Leahy with 24 points 5 rebounds 6 assists and 4 steals, Brandon Scheurer with 18 points 6 rebounds 1 assist and 5 steals, and Connor Cross with 12 points 7 rebounds and 2 assists.
Coach Mark Scheurer was happy to get back on the court after Winter Break. "I thought our third quarter play was the difference in the game and indicative of how we want to play. We defended very well and moved the ball and made the extra pass. Brandon and Nate did what they are supposed to do, and that's make shots. This was a good win for us coming back from winter break."
The Shamrocks are home Friday, January 11th versus Bath.
