On Thursday, December 14th, the Saranac Redskins visited Portland for a match with the St. Patrick's Shamrocks. Thanks to a quick start, and gritty play, the Shamrocks beat the Redskins 61-56.
In the 1st quarter, the Shamrocks jumped out ahead fast, led by 6 points from Brandon Scheurer and 5 points from Nathaniel Leahy. Good defense from the Shamrocks put them up 20-7.
The 2nd quarter saw the Redskins claw their way back, outscoring the Shamrocks 15-13, leaving the score 33-22 at halftime.
The Redskins came out at halftime much the same way as the 2nd quarter, winning the 3rd quarter 22-20, leaving a tight game at 53-44 coming into the 4th quarter, and the Redskins surging.
In the 4th quarter, the Shamrocks hit a dry spell and were unable to score from the field. Relying on free throws, the Shamrocks were only able to muster 8 points, led by Brandon Scheurer who went 7-12 from the charity stripe in the 4th. The Redskins again outscored the Shamrocks 12-8 in the 4th, but St. Patrick's was able to hold on for the win.
Offensive leaders for St. Patrick's were Brandon Scheurer with 27 points 3 rebounds 2 assists and 2 steals, Nathaniel Leahy with 15 points 7 rebounds and 5 assists and Connor Cross chipped in 12 points 7 rebounds 3 assists and 3 steals.
Coach Mark Scheurer was happy with the win. "I thought our energy was good tonight. We got out and pushed the ball extremely well early and did enough at the end to get a victory. Great team effort."
The Shamrocks play Fowler next Wednesday, December 19th, at 7:30 pm at Portland Middle School.
