Pirate boys defeat the Shamrocks

St. Patrick's visited the fields of Westphalia for a showdown with the PW Pirate boys basketball team on Wednesday, December 12th. Despite moments of excellence, the Pirates were just too physical and overwhelmed the Shamrocks with a final score of 68-34.

The 1st quarter was a back and forth for most of the period, but the Pirates pulled ahead significantly towards the end and finished up 21-7.

In the 2nd quarter, the Shamrocks showed some offensive spark, as Sophomore Connor Cross scored 7, but the Pirates continued out muscling St. Patrick's on the boards and finished up 20-13, taking a 41-20 lead into the half.

The 3rd quarter was the closest of all, but still left the Shamrocks struggling to put together an effective offense consistently, and the Pirates pulled ahead even further winning the quarter 17-12.

The 4th quarter went by quickly, with neither team scoring much. PW won the final quarter 10-2.

Offensive leaders were Connor Cross with 11 points 1 rebound 1 assist and 1 block, Seth Hoppes with 7 points 2 rebounds and 1 steal, and Nathaniel Leahy with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Coach Mark Scheurer was pleased with his team’s effort. "I thought we made steps as a team today. PW plays excellent defense and really attacks the boards hard. We need to get more aggressive on our rebounding, and more disciplined on our offense, but I believe we got better today."

The Shamrocks play home against Saranac on Friday, December 14th at 7:30 pm at Portland Middle School.
