The Webberville Spartans visited the St. Patrick’s Shamrocks on Friday November 30th for a showdown at Portland Middle School. Both teams came to play, but the Shamrocks were just a bit too tough for the visiting team, and earned a win with the final score being 41-35 Shamrocks.
From the beginning, this had the makings of a really great game, with both teams hustling and playing scrappy defense. After the 1st quarter, the Shamrocks held a slim lead at 13-11 with both teams having very balanced scoring, for the Shamrocks Nathaniel Leahy led St. Patrick’s with 4 points.
In the 2nd quarter, the Shamrocks again outscored the Spartans by a narrow margin, 14-10, taking 27-21 lead into halftime. John Schneider led the way for the Shamrocks, scoring 5 points.
In the 3rd quarter, both teams played exceptional defense with very little in the way of offensive scoring. Nathan Lehnert hit a huge 3 pointer, and his cousin Brandon Scheurer added another 2 points as the Shamrocks extended their lead slightly, leading 32-21 after 3 quarters of basketball.
In the 4th quarter, the Shamrocks were able to hold onto their lead, while losing the quarter 9-12. Free Throws were critical, as Sam Mauren went 3-6 from the line, and Connor Cross chipped in a 3 point play to hold off the hardworking Spartans.
Balanced scoring was the theme of the day for the St. Patrick’s Shamrocks. John Schneider, Graham Wohlscheid, Connor Cross and Sam Mauren all had 6 points, while Brandon Scheurer and Nathaniel Leahy both chipped in 7 point a piece. Brandon Scheurer was the Dennis Rodman of the night with 10 rebounds, and he also threw in 3 assists and 2 steals. Graham Wohlsheid had a solid night on the glass, snatching 6 rebounds.
Coach Mark Scheurer was very pleased with his teams’ performance. “I thought our defensive pressure and help side defense was the key. We held a very good Webberville team to 35 points. The team should be proud of themselves”.
The Shamrocks play next week at Laingsburg, next Friday December 7th at 7 p.m.
