Portland started the defense of their CAAC White Championship against new league foe Sexton on Friday night. After a sluggish start Portland beat Sexton in convincing fashion, 33-12, scoring in every way imaginable. Portland scored on Offense, Defense, and on Special Teams.

After Portland’s Defense held Sexton to a 3 and out, Portland would start with good field position. On 3rd and nine, Sexton scooped up a Portland fumble and raced in for the first touchdown of the game from 63 yards out. The extra point attempt failed. With 7:34 left in the 1st quarter, Portland trailed 6-0. That score would hold up at the end of the 1st quarter Portland 0, Sexton 6.

In the 2nd Quarter, Senior SB Jake Veale would get Portland’s scoring started with an 8-yard TD. Sr. Kicker Tate Dziewiatowski would convert the extra point attempt. With 6:20 left in the half Portland 7, Sexton 6.

With 1:13 left in the half, Veale again would find the end zone this time from 21 yards out. Dziewiatowski converted the extra point. At the end of the half Portland 14, Sexton 6.

Each team would trade punts to start the second half, before Portland would drive down to the 4-yard line where Veale would again score. The extra point was no good. With 2:41 left in the 3rd quarter, Portland 20 Sexton 6. Sexton would mount a drive of their own which finished with a 15-yard TD by Sr. RB Markell Goins-Ellison. The 2-point conversion failed. However, on the ensuing kickoff Portland would answer with a 90-yard Kickoff return by Veale. Dziewiatowski’s extra point was good. At the end of the 3rd quarter Portland 27, Sexton 12.

The Defense would come up big yet again in the game. Sr. CB Mitch Mallek would return an interception from 22 yards out. The extra point failed. With 9:57 left in the game Portland 33, Sexton 12. The Defense would keep Sexton from scoring again to seal the win.

After the game Coach Novara said, “Our Defense played well again tonight against a very athletic Sexton Football team. Offensively we struggled early, but where able to put together enough drives against a very good defense. We scored a defensive touchdown and a special teams’ touchdown. We have to clean up our mistakes.”

Portland’s next game will be Friday, September 14, at Charlotte. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. Game Statistics
