Relay for Life Returns to Portland July 28th
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life returns to Portland this year to support the fight for a cancer-free world. On Saturday, July 28, Relay for Life will bring our community together to honor individuals who have bravely battled cancer. Survivors, their families and all those who have been affected by this disease are invited to walk around the Portland High School track to create a united network of support and dedication.
Relay for Life of Portland merged with Relay of Life of Ionia County last year to form one organization in the community working to raise money to fight cancer. Different cities in Ionia County now take turns hosting Relay for Life each year. Funds raised support programs and services for patients and their families in Ionia County, like the Road to Recovery program, which provides transportation to and from treatment for people with cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves.
This year’s Relay will run from 10am-11pm and include activities like a silent auction, bounce house, a photo booth, concession stand and lawn games throughout the day. One of the most memorable events is the Luminaria Ceremony, which will begin at 10pm. During this ceremony, everyone has the opportunity to light candles and take a moment to honor those who have beat the disease, those who are still fighting, and those who have courageously fought but lost their lives to cancer.
Anyone and everyone is invited to Relay for Life. Let’s come together to add another birthday candle to every birthday cake this year!
