Obituary for William P. Simon


William P. Simon, age 89, of Portland, passed away on May 26, 2018 at the Portland Assisted Living and Memory Center. He was born on December 29, 1928, the son of Arthur and Martha (Fox) Simon at home in Pewamo. William graduated from Pewamo High School in 1947. He married Mary Ann Smith on June 22, 1950 and they were married for 40 years before her death on March 29, 1991. He was a very hard worker and good provider for his family. He retired from General Motors after more than 40 years of service. He worked at Joe Bauer’s Lumber Mill for 19 years while also working at G.M. He loved to dance, he enjoyed riding his bike, playing cards, and reading. William provided food for the many animals in his backyard (deer, squirrels and birds). He enjoyed watching them daily. William has traveled the United States and all parts of the world. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the K of C #2168 in Portland. He loved his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. William was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ann Simon; son, Mark Simon; and brothers, Dick Simon, Tom (Bernie) Simon, and John (Mary Ann) Simon. Surviving are his children: Mike (Tina) Simon of Lansing, Marlene (friend, Mike Keusch) McAllister of Portland, Bryan (Leona) Simon of Grand Ledge, and Pat (Sally) Simon of Saranac; 16 grandchildren: Jeff (Emily) Simon, Erik Simon, Dawn Pugh, Scott (Jennifer) Pugh, Michael Pugh, David McAllister, Audra (Dan) Keefer, Christopher Simon, Steven Simon, Michael Simon, Ashley (Jim) Fenlon, Marianna Simon, Nicole Simon, Heather (George) Cassel, Cameron Simon, and Jordy Simon; 12 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Christine Simon; sister-in-law, Rosemary Simon and close friend, Sandra Olsen. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Mike Alber at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Wednesday at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. The rosary will be prayed at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Patrick Athletic Association or to St. Jude Children’s Research in memory of William.
