Summer Activities for Kids


With the end of the school year just around the corner, many parents are looking for affordable activities for their kids this summer. Below is a list of affordable activities right her in Portland. For more information on any of these, please contact the listed contact for that activity.

The Greatest Show on Earth

First Congregational Church of Portland will host four fun-filled nights under the Big Top filled with amazing acts in the center ring, a carnival of games, crafts, stories, and dinner all included. All completely free. Registration forms on Facebook page and at the church office. Kids Bowl Free

The Wagon Wheel is participating in a program that offers free summer bowling for kids. You can keep the kids active this summer by signing-up for Kids Bowl Free. By enrolling, your child is eligible for two free games of bowling every day the Wagon Wheel are open in the summer.

Baseball 101 Skills Camp

This is a three-day baseball camp run by St. Patrick School varsity baseball players and coaches. The 2018 camp runs June 18, 19 and 20.

Daily times vary by age group.

Ages 7-8 @ 9:00am—9:55am

Ages 9-10 @ 10:00am—10:55am

Ages 11-14 @ 11:00am--11:55am

The purpose of this camp is to focus on the basic skills and fundamentals of baseball. Participants will work on skills in the areas of: hitting, defense, base running, pitching, catching and teamwork.

Camp will be held at Father Flohe Field, Cost for camp is $30.00. Registration form due by June 15th.

Portland Raider Football Camp 2018

This is a football camp for boys and girls in grades 4 through 12 and is run by PHS football coaches and varsity players. The camp will run July 24th to 26​th at Portland High School.

Grades 10 – 12, 9:00 –11:00am and 12:30 –2:00 pm.

Grades 4-9, 6:00–8:00pm.

The cost of the camp is $20 which includes three days of camp, a t-shirt and pizza on the last day. Please make checks payable to Portland Public Schools and mail registration to Portland High School, 1100 Ionia Rd. Portland High Girls Basketball to Host Youth Summer Basketball Camp

The PHS girls’ basketball team will be hosting a youth summer basketball camp June 11th – June 14th at Portland High School. Grades K-4 will go 8:00am-9:15am and grades 5-8 will go 9:30am-11:00am. The cost of the camp is $35 per participant, with $5 off for each additional sibling that signs up. The camp if being run by PHS girls’ varsity coach Jason Haid, along with assistant coaches and PHS players. There will be different theme each day of camp. Day 1 will be “Crazy Sock” day. Other themes will be announced.

Portland Parks and Recreation Summer Activities

The City of Portland Parks and Recreation is offering a number of activities this summer. K/1 Flag Football

Age Groups: Kindergarten/1st graders (based on 2018-2019 school year)

Description: Youth flag football program played in local parks with a 5-7 game schedule.

Cost: $35 resident fee, $45 for all others

Dates: Practice begins mid-July and the season ends the second week of August.

Youth Archery

Age Groups: 3rd-8th graders (based on 2018-2019 school year)

Description: 5 session introductory archery training held at Thompson Park 6-7pm.

Cost: $40 resident fee, $50 for all others

Dates: July 10, 12, 17, 19 & 24.

Golf Camp

Age Groups: 8-14 years old

Description: 4 session golf instructional program, 9:00-10:30am at Willow Wood Golf Course

Cost: $45 resident fee, $55 for all others

Dates: June 25-28

Youth Sportsman Camp

Age Groups: 3rd-8th graders (based on 2018-2019 school year)

Description: 3 session introductory program on hunting, fishing and camping. 4-7pm held at Holloway

Park and Grand River Conservation Club.

Cost: $40 resident fee, $50 for all others

Dates: August 7-9
