Raider Soccer Stung by Bees

The Portland Raider girls’ soccer team fell to the Fighting Bees of Bath on Monday night by a score of four to zero.

The Raiders’ overall record now moves to six and six on the year.

After the game, coach Chris Roof said, “We played them on Saturday. It was a zero one game so it was a very close game. We’ve got a few players hurt, a few players were changing positions so I figured tonight would be a good time to try players in different positions. We were able to get a lot more offensive pressure then we did the last game so I figured a 2-0 or a 4-0 kind of score.”

Roof added, “We have a very young team this year. We have five freshman that are starters, and then three sophomores so we kind of have a mixed JV starting line-up type deal, but we have no seniors so we will not graduate anyone. We are working a lot of people in different spots. We want to do good this year, but we are also thinking into next year.”

When asked about his young team maturing though the season, Roof said, “They have matured very well. We actually had a winning record in the league this year which is the first time in like six years. We competed very well in the league. Our only league losses were to Lansing Catholic and Williamston, and typically those are mercy losses for us. We ran one game 4-1 and one game 3-1, so they were very close, very competitive. That is what I am looking for this year with this young group, just to be competitive. We have been pretty competitive in every single game. Every game that we have loss has been relatively close. “

Roof also sounded optimistic about the growth of the program’s number of players. He said, “I am pretty excited. We have 24 on the roster this year. My first year three years ago we had 13 and ended the season with 10.”

The Raiders next action will be on Thursday when they host Lansing Waverly.
