Raider Golf Comes up Short in Opener With Lakewood and Finishes Third in First Jamboree
The Portland boys’ varsity golf team not only opened up their 2018 match play on Wednesday afternoon, but also played their first, full round of nine holes of stroke play golf of the season. The Raiders came up four strokes short of finishing on the winning side of the dual match played against Lakewood at Centennial Acres Golf Course by the score of 188 to 191.
Zach Pier took top individual honors in the match with a solid three over par 39. Evan Foreback finished with 47; Ethan Getchell shot a 51; Kyle Leonard carded a 54 and Devin Miller and Nick Maynard each came in with 55.
The team opened up 2018 conference play on Thursday afternoon with a divisional jamboree played at Bonnie View Golf Course in Eaton Rapids. The Raiders finished the day with 3 wins and 2 losses. The reigning C.A.A.C. White Division Champs Lansing Catholic grabbed a four stroke victory over Williamston and Portland to take first place with a team score of 174. Using a fifth score tie-breaker, Williamston took second with a score of 178 over Portland who also scored a 178 for third place. Fowlerville’s score of 200 took fourth place. Ionia finished in fifth with a 208. With only three golfers playing, Eaton Rapids was unable to post a team score. Scoring for the Raiders was: Zach Pier shot a five over par 41; Ethan Getchell and Kyle Leonard each finished with rounds of 45 and Devin Miller rounded out the Raider scoring with a 47.
Weather permitting, the varsity’s next match is a non-divisional, dual match against Lowell at the Portland Country Club on Monday, April 16th.
