District Wins “Safety is No Accident Award”

At the November 13th Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Will Heath accepted a “Safety is No Accident Award” from SET SEG’s MASB-SEG Property/Casualty Pool. Portland is one of only five districts to receive the award statewide in 2017.

According to a release from the company, “The award is presented annually to public school districts that utilize risk management plans to improve their facility maintenance programs and reduce claims and accidents on their properties. Portland Public Schools was recognized for their dedication to safety throughout their facilities and grounds. SET SEG Loss Control Representative Skip Barclay credits the staff with keeping a well-maintained campus and reducing risk factors that may cause an injury or accident.”

“The district is highly responsive to requests and prepared to make recommended changes to keep their district safe,” said Barclay. “They prioritize the safety of their staff and students by regularly utilizing SafeSchools employee training courses and following standards for best practices.”

The release also indicated that, “Portland Public Schools has been a member of the MASB-SEG Property/Casualty Pool for 28 years. The Property/Casualty Pool is a member-owned, risk-sharing insurance pool providing coverage and services tailored specifically to meet the needs of Michigan’s public education community. The Pool is an entity of SET SEG, a Lansing-based company that provides insurance and benefit services to more than 550 school districts, ISDs and community colleges across the state.”

Heath was presented the award by Portland resident and SET SEG’s Chief Administrator, Amy Guilford.
