Shamrocks Over Tekonsha 42-22 for 2017 Homecoming Win

The St. Patrick Shamrocks hosted the Indians of Tekonsha Friday night in the Shamrock 2017 Homecoming game. With a 90 plus degree temperature at kick-off, it was likely one of the hottest September homecoming games on record.

The Shamrocks struck first in their first possession. Starting on their own 45, St. Patrick’s drove down the field in a ten-play scoring drive, capped off with a 16-yard TD pass from junior QB Tanner Lawson to senior receiver Will Simon with 6:43 remaining in the first. The PAT by sophomore kicker Jeff Davlin put the Shamrocks up 7-0.

The Indians of Tekonsha followed with an impressive drive of their own. They went 72 yards in 14 plays, but the Shamrock defense finally stopped them on their own eight-yard line.

After a Shamrock punt, the Indians threatened again, and scored on a five-yard run by junior QB Anthony Layne. The two-point conversion run by Layne was good, putting Tekonsha up 8-7 with 10:12 left in the half.

St. Patrick’s would drive the ball down to Tekonsha’s 20-yard line in their next possession, but were unable to get any points.

Tekonsha fumbled the ball right back to the Shamrock’s on their first play of their series. The fumble was recovered by sophomore Alex Kissane. Three plays later the Shamrocks retook the lead on a 17-yard TD pass from Lawson to senior receiver Colin Cook. The two-point conversion pass to junior Paul Cook was good, putting St. Patrick’s up 13-8.

The Shamrock defense was able to quickly stop the Indian offense during the next possession, but the Tekonsha punt was misplayed by the Shamrocks, and the Indians recovered the ball on their own 38. On the following play, Tekonsha’s junior running back A.J. Crisp broke free for a 62-yard TD run. The Tekonsha two-point conversion pass was no good, and the score was Tekonsha 14, St Patrick’s 13, with 3:41 remaining in the first half.

Before he first half came to a close, the Shamrocks would get on the board one more time. Starting at the Tekonsha 30, the Shamrocks would score five plays later on a 15-yard TD run by sophomore running back Ned Smith. The two-point conversion run by Ned Smith was also good, putting the Shamrocks up 21-14 going into halftime.

During the halftime festivities, senior Amelia Schrauben was announced as Homecoming Queen, and senior Will Simon was announced Homecoming King.

The Indians put together an impressive drive to start the second half, but were stopped when sophomore Riley Kissane intercepted a pass in the end zone.

The Shamrocks would capitalize on the turn over with another scoring drive. This one topped off with an 8-yard TD run by junior Paul Cook. The two-point conversion was no good, and the score went to Shamrocks 27, Indians 14.

Neither team would score for the remainder of the third quarter, but with 10:36 left in the game, Shamrock Paul Cook would scamper for a 60-yard TD run through the Indian defense. The conversion pass was no good, and the Shamrocks led 33-14.

The following on-side kick attempt by the Shamrocks was successful, and St. Patrick’s had the ball back on the Tekonsha 46. Soon after, Lawson connected with Colin Cook on a 40-yard touchdown pass. The PAT by Devlin was blocked, and St. Patrick’s lead 39-14 with 9:42 left in the game.

On the Shamrock’s next possession, they would get on the board one more time with a 22-yard field goal by Devlin with 2:51 left in the game, putting the score at Shamrocks 42, Indians 14.

The Indians had a little gas left in their tank. Running back Crisp broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run through the Shamrock defense. The two-point conversion pass from Layne to Junior Noah Mead was good. With 2:35 left in the game, the Shamrocks were still up 42-22.

That is how the score would stay, and the Shamrocks won 42-22.

St. Patrick’s will travel to Michigan Lutheran next week.
