Shamrocks Roll Over Bobcats 59-0

The St. Patrick Shamrock varsity football team hosted the Burr Oak Bobcats on Thursday night at Portland High School, and ended up hanging 59 points on the board before the night was over.

The Shamrocks scored their first points on their very first position. Sophomore running back Ned Smith broke free for a 72-yard touchdown run. The point after by sophomore kicker Jeff Davlin was good, putting the Shamrocks up 7-0 with 10:22 left in the first quarter.

The Shamrocks started their next possession at the Bobcat 39-yard line, and scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass from junior QB Tanner Lawson to senior Colin Cook. The point after by Davlin was no good, putting the Shamrocks up 13-0 with 8:29 remaining in the first.

Burr Oak junior quarterback Braxton Hernandez had a hard time getting comfortable in the pocket all night due to the aggressive Shamrock defensive line. In their next possession, Hernandez was sacked by St. Patrick’s Ned Smith, and threw an interception to senior Will Simon.

The Shamrocks took over at their own 29, and pieced together their third consecutive touchdown drive. This one capped off with a 55-yard touchdown run by junior running back Paul Cook. The PAT was blocked, making the score 19-0 with 6:10 to go in the first.

Once again, the Bobcats could not put together a sustained drive, and had to punt away.

St. Patrick’s started their next possession at their own 43. The Shamrock offense continued to push through and scored on a five-yard touchdown run by Paul Cook. The PAT by Davlin was good, making the score 26-0 with 1:55 left in the first.

The Shamrock offense sputtered a bit in their first possession of the second quarter and turned the ball over on downs, but was right back on track in their next possession. This drive was 60 yards, and was finished with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Lawson to Simon. The PAT was no good and the score was 32-0 with 7:52 left in the half.

The Bobcat struggles continued with a bad snap when attempting to punt, and the Shamrocks took over on the Burr Oak 22-yard line.

The Shamrocks quickly out together another scoring drive, and finished with a 16-yard touchdown run by Ned Smith. Davlin knocked in the PAT bringing the score to 39-0 with 5:45 left in the half, and the score remained that way until halftime.

St. Patrick’s received the kick to start the second half, and quickly resumed their scoring ways. This drive ended with a three-yard touchdown pass from Lawson to Paul Cook. Davlin connected on the PAT making the score 46-0.

After the Bobcats turned the ball back over on downs, St. Pats reached the end zone yet again when sophomore John Schneider broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run. Davlin’s PAT was blocked, and the score was 52-0 with 2:38 left in the 3rd.

At this point the running clock rule was implemented due to the substantial Shamrock lead, and remained in place for the rest of the game.

Burr Oak was able to put together a 30-yard drive, but ended up turning it over on downs at the Shamrock 25-yard line.

The St. Patrick offense had the steam to put together one last scoring drive, and scored their last touchdown on a 47-yard touchdown pass from freshman Connor Cross to sophomore Zach Spitzley with time running out. The PAT by Davlin was good, and the final score was 59-0.

Ned Smith finished with 170 rushing yards and Cook finished with 107. Lawson was four of eight for 72 yards passing.

The Shamrocks travel to Webberville for their week three match-up. That game will start Friday night at 7:00 PM.
